Under the fundholder-owned model, anyone who purchases an investment product (e.g., a mutual fund or an exchange-traded fund) issued by an investment management firm gains a proportional ownership stake in that firm. Under the shareholder-owned model, ownership of the investment management firm is separate from fund ownership: to have a stake in the investment management firm one must purchase its shares, and purchasing its investment products does not grant any share of ownership in the firm.
